I love insects. So much so that I decided to draw three of my favourites. The Common Cockchafer featured on this plate is hand illustrated in pen and ink, and then applied by ceramic decal to the surface of these lovely decorative tea plates measuring 21cm.
Each plate features the insect and its name on the front and a factual description on the reverse. Beautiful, functional and educational. These plates are a great size for use as a decorative wall piece, or for a slice of your favourite cake.
All pieces are fired in my kiln to 850 degrees, making each design permanent and dishwasher safe.
The bottom of this plate reads:
adults: 25mm - 30mm long
Also known as the May Bug, Spang Beetle and Billy Witch, the Cockchafer appears in early May and lives for five to seven weeks. They feed on Oak leaves and Conifer needles. They are easily identified by their unusual antennae. Males have seven leaves sprouting from their antennae, whereas females only have six.
